Memo from Msgr. Raun - Friday, April 24th, 2020

My dear family in the Lord,

Friends, there's a lot of anxiety going around!

What’s the difference between stress and anxiety?

Stress is part of life. Pains and problems, decisions, discords, and demands are all examples of stress. The more responsibility we have the more stress we experience.

Stress becomes anxiety when stress gets inside us. Anxiety is not inevitable. It’s an uncomfortable problem that can dominate our lives, steal our joy, and cripple our ability to function.

When we’re anxious we say, “I’m stressed out!” But really we ought to say, “I’m stressed in!” That’s because anxiety is stress internalized. When we take stress into our bodies it affects us. We feel it in our bodies and emotions. It causes us health problems. It changes the way we think. It affects the way we act and relate to others.

God’s Word is full of the wisdom and care that we need to apply in order to live in God’s peace. Over the next few days I want to share with you some anxiety Bible verses to help us learn how to live as disciples of the Prince of Peace. Share them!

Don’t Rely on Yourself for Security – Listen to God’s Wisdom and Trust His Way

“Whoever listens to [the voice of wisdom] will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” Proverbs 1:33

Don’t Worry – Pray About your Anxieties, Ask for What you Need, and Give Thanks to God

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

RECONSECRATION OF OUR COUNTRY TO OUR LADY: Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles is the president of the United States Bishops conference. He has asked all the bishops of our country to reconsecrate our country to our Blessed Mother on Friday, May 1st - the start of Our Lady's special month. This is being done specifically to ask the Blessed Virgin's intercession to stop the corona virus. (We say "reconsecrated" because our nation was consecrated to our Lady in 1846 as the patroness of the United States under her title of the Immaculate Conception.)

So, on Friday, May 1st, at 6 pm, in place of the regular Holy Hour, we are going to live-stream from the church our own parish May Crowning, which will include the consecration of our parish to our Lady, in spiritual union with all our bishops. Mark your calendar to join us!

HOLINESS TIP: Humility is not going around saying “I’m no good.” Instead, humility is putting God first in everything we think, do, or say, then putting everyone else second, and finally, ourselves third. The acronym here is JOY – Jesus first, Others second, Yourself third. If we do that, then sooner or later we will have joy in our lives, rather than sadness and depression, which always result from putting ourselves first. The devil’s great sin is pride, and humility is the opposite virtue which overcomes it.

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE:
Me: "Alexa what’s the weather this weekend?" Alexa: "It doesn’t matter – you’re not going anywhere."

Can everyone please just follow the government instructions so we can knock out this corona virus and be done? I feel like a kindergartner who keeps losing more recess time because one or two kids can’t follow directions.

OUR PRAYER FOR THE DAY: A Prayer of Saint Augustine for Easter

Lord Jesus, I beseech Thee by Thy glorious Resurrection, raise me up from the tomb of my sins and vices, and daily give me a part in Thy Resurrection by grace, that I may be made a partner also in Thy Resurrection of glory.

I send you my fatherly blessing, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen !
